K9 Kai, a Belgian Malinois, had only been working alongside the Gwinnett County Police Department for about a year when he proved his worth to the team. As a dual-purpose K9, he was responsible for assisting with both narcotics and patrol operations, and he excelled in this role. Unfortunately, Kai’s duties were cut short when he sustained severe injuries while on duty. During an incident involving a suspect armed with a gun, Kai was shot. His handler, Cpl. Aaron Carlyle, immediately rushed him to an emergency vet. Despite the setback, the courageous dog refused to give up the fight and continued to display unwavering bravery and determination.
In May 24th of 2022, a domestic disturbance was reported to the Gwinnett County Police Department. An armed man had threatened a woman with a handgun and quickly fled the scene before K9 officer Kai and other officers arrived. The department subsequently dispatched their aviation unit and K9 officers to locate the suspect who was found hiding in a nearby wooded area. As they approached the suspect, gunfire erupted which led to brave K9 officer Kai stepping in harm’s way to protect his team from being shot. Unfortunately, Kai was hit by a bullet but one of the officers responded by firing at the suspect to neutralize the threat.
Levi Bryan, a teenager, was found responsible for the shooting incident. Fortunately, he survived and was taken to the hospital. Kai, the police K-9, received multiple gunshot wounds, but he is now in stable condition after being treated by a veterinarian. Cpl. Carlyle credits Kai as a hero since he took bullets that were meant for the police officers. Kai showed remarkable dedication to his job and remained focused despite the danger.
Bryan is facing several charges, one of which pertains to hurting Kai, a police animal. Luckily, Kai survived the incident, but his recovery was far from easy. The officers who rushed him to the vet administered initial first aid, which increased his chances of survival. Kai was shot multiple times and needed a blood and plasma transfusion. Additionally, one of his lungs had a hole, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs. After weeks of observation and care at the emergency vet, Kai is finally ready to go home with Cpl. Carlyle, who has been taking care of him.
The Gwinnett Police Department recently announced that their K9 officer, Kai, has undergone a successful surgery and is currently recuperating at home with his handler, Cpl. Carlyle. Although Kai will require physical therapy to adjust to life with one less leg, Cpl. Carlyle is taking great care of him and ensuring that he receives all the love and attention he needs. Despite not being able to return to duty, Kai will continue to live with his handler and receive the best possible treatment. The department is grateful for Kai’s service and legacy, even though his tenure as a K9 officer was brief.
