The following article contains visuals that may be disturbing to some readers. Wendy Andersen, a veterinary technician at the Animal Clinic of Milford, had quite the day in December 2016. A tiny kitten, only 10 weeks old, was brought in for emergency treatment after chewing on a wire attached to a faulty electrical socket. Unfortunately, the kitten suffered electrocution as a result of this accident, as shared by Wendy.
After conducting an examination on a small grey kitten, Wendy and veterinarian Dr. Sasha Golovyan discovered severe damage to the animal’s nose, tongue, and trachea. Despite the cat’s family having a strong attachment to it, they were unable to provide the necessary care required for the feline’s well-being, leading them to surrender the 10-week-old kitty to a Connecticut-based animal hospital. The image was captured by @zappzappleton on Instagram.
According to Wendy, the kitten suffered from considerable facial tissue decay following the injury, resulting in the loss of its nose and a portion of its tongue. As a result of the damage inflicted on its trachea, he needed a tracheotomy. To prevent potential breathing difficulties caused by mucus build-up, Wendy and the hospital staff had to consistently nebulize the kitten and clean and flush its tracheotomy site.
The little kitty was given utmost care and attention, but there were moments when his survival was in doubt. During Wendy’s night shift, she once had to resuscitate him because he stopped breathing. Because of the seriousness of his injuries, he needed to be watched 24/7, causing many sleepless nights for Wendy. The kitten’s journey to healing was a challenging one.
Wendy gave the cutest kitten a name derived from a character in the TV series Futurama – Zapp. This little furball had difficulty eating on its own and relied on a feeding tube. Despite needing treatments and procedures, Zapp remained an adorable and grateful patient, soaking up all the attention and affection given by his caregivers. Wendy fondly remembers how Zapp relished these moments and seemed to understand that the treatments were meant to make him feel better.
@zappzappleton’s Instagram post highlights the hurdles that Zapp has had to overcome following multiple surgeries, including a trachea resection. Despite undergoing reconstructive surgery at a specialized hospital in Boston, the severity of his injuries meant that it was unsuccessful. To prevent food from entering his nasal passage, doctors created an obturator, but unfortunately, it did not work. Additionally, Zapp faced acute kidney failure, and as a result, he was prescribed a specific diet to manage his symptoms.
The Instagram account @zappzappleton featured the lovable kitten Zapp, who endured several health challenges at a young age. However, Zapp’s positive attitude and sweet disposition remained intact despite it all. The staff at the Animal Clinic of Milford went above and beyond to provide Zapp with the best care possible, ensuring his overall health and happiness. Wendy, who had grown attached to Zapp during his stay, eagerly agreed to adopt him when the clinic suggested it.
@zappzappleton has shared a photo on Instagram that showcases the content and satisfied state of Zapp in his new abode, where he has been living for over two years now. He is thriving and seems to be relishing snuggles, chasing laser pointers, munching on his owner’s homemade delicacies, indulging in games on her iPad, hiding beneath blankets, and playfully wrestling with his other furry companions. Nonetheless, owing to the injuries he sustained while only ten weeks old, he demands more care and attention than his feline counterparts.
@zappzappleton shared a photo on Instagram featuring a charming feline named Zapp with unique facial features. The owner, Wendy, stated that Zapp’s distinct appearance posed challenges for him in terms of proper grooming and eating. Wendy also mentioned that she goes the extra mile in taking care of Zapp by carefully cleaning his face regularly and preventing food from getting stuck in his nasal passage to avoid infections. Despite the obstacles, Wendy and Zapp have established a great bond over the last couple of years.
@zappzappleton’s Instagram post showcases the heartwarming bond between a pet owner and her special needs pet. It proves that these animals are just as capable of giving love and affection as any other pet. Wendy understands that taking care of such animals may not be feasible for everyone due to various reasons, including financial constraints, emotional limitations, or physical disabilities. However, she believes that those who can take on the challenge of caring for special needs pets will find it immensely fulfilling. Wendy herself cannot picture her life without her beloved Zapp, who has brought endless happiness and love into her world.
Wendy developed a special connection with Zapp, a cat who had suffered severe injuries, while providing him with care. Through this experience, she gained valuable personal and professional insights that were transformative for her. You can find a photo of Zapp on the Instagram page @zappzappleton.
